Oral cancer belongs to a category of cancers known as head and neck cancers. It develops on parts of the oral cavity and throat tissues. The most affected areas are the tongue, lips, cheeks, gums, teeth, the roof of the mouth, and under the tongue. The disease accounts for approximately three percent of new cancer cases detected in the United States every year. When discovered in the early stages, it is easy to treat. For this reason, it’s advisable to go for regular screening.
Tobacco use is one of the leading risk factors for oral cancer. Alcohol can also trigger the development of the condition. People who use the two products heavily and regularly are in great danger of developing this cancer. Other risk factors include infection by the Human Papilloma Virus, weak immunity, and family history of cancers. Additionally, this cancer is prevalent in people above the age of 40. It occurs in twice the number of men than women.
Oral cancer manifests itself in many ways. Below are some of its symptoms
Diagnosis begins with a physical exam. The doctor inspects the surfaces of your mouth, tongue, cheeks, throat, and the neck lymph nodes. An ENT examination may also be necessary. If the doctor finds some lesions, a tissue biopsy follows. Other procedures like X-rays, CT scan, MRI, and so on can determine the extent to which the disease has spread.
