Dental emergencies are problems related to teeth or supporting tissues that require expeditious treatment. They can result from bacterial, fungal, or viral infections as well as dental trauma. Here are some common examples and their solutions.

Toothache

One example of dental emergencies is a toothache. The main reason for a toothache is a cavity. You can ease the pain by rinsing the mouth with lukewarm saltwater. If tissues of the oral cavity have swollen, apply a cold compress from the outside. Visit a dental clinic for specialized treatment.

Broken or Chipped Teeth

An injury can make part of your tooth to break off. If the tooth is painful, rinsing the mouth with warm water can calm it down. You can also apply a cold compress on the cheek adjacent to the tooth. In case you are bleeding, apply a square gauze or a piece of cotton wool to suppress the flow. You can buy dental cement from a drugstore and cover the chipped tooth before visiting your dentist.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you lose your tooth in an accident, an endodontic specialist can replace it if you preserve it correctly. Take the following measures.

  • Pick the tooth by the crown and rinse it in water if dirty
  • Reposition it in its socket and close the mouth
  • If you can’t reposition it, soak it in some milk (not water)
  • Visit an endodontist or dentist immediately
  • You can keep the tooth in your mouth next to the cheek or in a container. Milk will preserve the cells of the root longer than water. If you have to lose it, your dentist can apply other tooth replacement options.

Periodontal Abscess

An abscessed tooth forms a pocket of pus as a result of infection. It causes moderate to severe pain in the tooth or gums. This type of dental emergency requires professional treatment.
